The summer time is coming and that means more people heading outdoors. For me I can not think about riding bikes. We have always enjoyed riding our bikes as a family. Two years ago my daughter was turning a corner and a speeding truck came around in the wrong lane and the result was my daughter went airborne. She was unconscious for a few minutes and we could not remove her helmet is what the paramedics said. We just waited for what seemed like forever when suddenly we saw her beautiful eyes looking back at us! They put her on a board as they asked her questions. My wife and I did not take a single breathe until we heard the doctor say she was in good shape. Her helmet saved her life there is no doubt about that. We showed that helmet to all of her classmates so they would see what saved her. We have been thanked by many parents because now they say their kids always wear a helmet. We even went to a biking class that we take every year and showed the kids there. this all sent me to thinking about how many kids meet this same fate or much worse. The top head injury for children ages 14 and younger is cycling with a staggering number of 32,899! These are people’s children! Many of these could have been avoided with a helmet and the right safety precautions. We have to protect our children with knowledge. There are so many sports that put our children at risk of brain injury if they do not take the right safety precautions. We have to teach our children how important the steps are you take to make certain that their safe. We are protecting their brains! Think about what that statement says. As much as we do for our children this could be the most important.
